Translation and Dialogue interpreting Master's programme

Course outline, qualifications and competences

The master's programme Translation and Dialogue interpreting builds on theoretical and practical knowledge acquired in a relevant bachelor's programme. It offers in-depth knowledge of (foreign) languages and translation skills acquired in the bachelor's programme.

The programme encompasses the following languages:

Arabic, Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian, German, English, French, Italian, Austrian sign language, Russian, Slovenian, Spanish, Turkish, Hungarian

The programme focusses on fundamental scientific knowledge and methods as well as practical skills required for professional work in various fields of translation and interpretation, as required for multilingual communication. To prepare students for various different jobs, the curriculum offers the following specialist modules: Translation for Business and Tourism, Translation for Society, Culture and Literature, Translation for Science and Technology, Translation at Court and for Authorities, Public Service Interpreting, Liaison Interpreting and Conference Interpreting, Text Interpreting and Respeaking. Studies or internships abroad are an obligatory part of the education. Experience gained in the aforesaid area fosters linguistic skills as well as social and intercultural competences that are prerequisite to the profession of the translator and dialogue interpreter.

Expected results

Graduates of the master's programme Translation and Dialogue interpreting are highly specialised experts for translation and interpretation. They will have developed the ability to engage in open and critical discourse on societal and cultural conditions of translation, will have deepened their competence in critically dealing with translation-related scientific models and methods, while acquiring the ability to work independently in the field of science and to organise and conduct scientific projects. In addition to their translation knowledge, graduates will have acquired key competences for their later careers, such as a broad scope of mental, social and technical skills.
