Conference interpreting Master's programme

Course outline, qualifications and competences

The master's programme Conference interpreting builds on theoretical and practical knowledge acquired in a relevant bachelor's programme. It offers in-depth knowledge of (foreign) languages and translation skills acquired in the bachelor's programme.

The programme is held in the A language (i.e. mother tongue or education language) German and two of the following foreign languages:

Arabic, Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian, German, English, French, Italian, Russian, Slovenian, Spanish, Hungarian

One foreign language has to be chosen as a B language (in which and from which interpreting is undertaken) and the other as a C language (which is interpreted into the A language). The programme focusses on fundamental scientific knowledge and methods as well as practical skills required for professional work. Studies or internships abroad are a recommended part of the education. Experience gained in the aforesaid area fosters linguistic skills as well as social and intercultural competences that are prerequisite to the profession of the conference interpreter.

Expected results

Graduates of the master's programme Conference interpreting are highly specialised experts for interpreting and inter/transcultural communication. By using appropriate interpretation techniques and strategies, texts and information, they will have acquired the ability to interpret situation-specifically and culturally sensitive into the target language, and convey longer texts either consecutively or simultaneously, reflecting all relevant nuances and details in an appropriate manner. In addition to their translation knowledge, graduates will have acquired key competences for their later careers, such as a broad scope of different mental, social and technical skills. Last but not least, they will have acquired knowledge in relation to dialogues with other cultures along with tolerance and open-mindedness.
