Sports Sciences and Kinesiology Master's programme

Course outline, qualifications and competences

The master’s programme Sports Science and Kinesiology aims to enhance, deepen and specialise knowledge and skills acquired in the bachelor’s programme, enabling students to plan and supervise research in sports sciences. The programme also provides in-depth knowledge in the areas of kinesiology and training sciences, sports physiology, public health and sports pedagogy. The master’s programme offers the opportunity to specialise in one of three subareas, enabling students to individualise their qualification profile and adapt it to their future career. These three areas are “Health Promotion, Prevention and Therapy”, “Adventure and Leisure” and “Performance and Training”. Students are required to complete an internship outside of university within their chosen specialist area. Should they wish to work in training therapy, the Austrian act regulating medical assistance professions (MAB Act) requires students to first acquire a bachelor’s degree in Sports Science and Kinesiology and to successfully complete the specialist module “Health Promotion, Prevention and Therapy” as part of the master’s programme. Beyond this specialist knowledge, students also acquire essential PR skills for their future careers (mechanisms of the advertising and media business and of sports management), as well as project management skills and communication and motivation strategies.

Expected results

Graduates of the master’s programme will have acquired specialist knowledge and skills in the areas of sports sciences and kinesiology. They will be able to plan, organise, carry out and assess projects in the following areas: public health, adventure, leisure and competitive sports projects, while taking scientifically established methods, current theories and pedagogical aspects into consideration.
