Sociology Bachelor's programme
Sociology describes, analyses and evaluates social processes and change throughout all levels of society. The bachelor’s programme is intended to provide basic education. Students learn key sociological terms and theories, their history, knowledge of modern society and core sociological areas and areas of application. Students learn how to employ scientific techniques and methods in their work and empirical research. These include conveying sociological argumentation techniques, writing scientific papers, and using basic methods and procedures of empirical social research (e.g. compilation of questionnaires, computer-supported statistical data evaluation, conducting and assessing qualitative interviews and observations, etc.). The programme includes neighbouring disciplines (business administration and economics, political science, ethnology, business languages, etc.) in the form of compulsory courses and restricted elective courses, lending sociology its interdisciplinary character. One key component of the programme is the completion of a semester abroad. It offers students the opportunity to practice their knowledge in an independently conducted empirical project. Besides acquiring knowledge relating to sociological methods and correct scientific working methods, students also develop social skills such as teamwork, communication and co-operation during a research internship.
Undergraduates of the bachelor’s programme Sociology will have acquired basic knowledge of sociological theories and methods, thus enabling them to deal with complex social processes on a scientific level. Moreover, they will be able to use traditional and new information media to ensure that their knowledge and skills continue to reflect current research.
