Romance Studies (French) Bachelor's programme

Course outline, qualifications and competences

The bachelor’s programme Romance Studies (French) focuses on the French language as well as literature and culture in France and francophone countries. This programme provides basic knowledge of linguistics, literature and cultural sciences required for the discipline. The level of language skills increases from A2 to B2 over the course of the programme (according to the CEFR, the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages). Students are able to apply the French language orally and in a written form, adapting it appropriately to specific situations. They will have command of a second (and, if chosen, a third) Romance language on an elementary level.  Moreover, they will acquire subject-specific academic writing skills. These include the ability to trace the relevant sources and literature, to proceed methodically and correctly, to use specialist terminology accurately, to critically assess and present results and knowledge in an appropriate manner. It is recommended to spend a period of time in a French-speaking country over the course of the programme. The experience of other cultural and social circumstances promotes abilities such as troubleshooting competences and the ability to communicate on an intercultural level, i.e. to develop an understanding for foreign cultures, openness and tolerance. Besides subject-specific skills, students also acquire general skills such as the ability to present their work, work with multimedia and to cooperate in a team.

Expected results

Undergraduates of the bachelor’s programme Romance Studies (French) will have acquired basic knowledge of Romance languages, especially of French language and literature, as well of social and cultural life in France and French-speaking countries. Undergraduates will be able to further their scientific knowledge of the subject and independently enhance their skills. The range of competences acquired during the programme comprises analytical and systematical thinking, presentation techniques and communicative and intercultural skills.
