Physics Bachelor's programme

Course outline, qualifications and competences

The bachelor’s programme Physics is offered as a NAWI Graz cooperation programme between the University of Graz and Graz University of Technology. The range of courses is broad, interdisciplinary and cross-academic. The programme is intended as a high-quality physical and mathematical preparatory professional training that provides students with methodical skills in the entire area of physics and pertaining areas. Students acquire profound knowledge of the core physical areas of mechanics, thermodynamics, quantum mechanics, electrodynamics and optics including knowledge of the structure of matter (particle, nuclear, atomic, molecular and solid state physics). Students deal with pertaining disciplines such as mathematics, chemistry and informatics, which is necessary in order to apply methods of physics (e.g. measuring methods, computer-based processing, mathematical methods, concepts of modelling and interpretation). Students are offered the opportunity of individualising their qualification profile and enhancing their knowledge and skills by selecting either the major “General Physics” (electronics, sensor technology, astrophysics, geophysics, meteorology, etc.) or “Engineering Physics” (basics of material science, cryogenics, vacuum engineering, continuum mechanics and fluid mechanics, etc.).  This theoretical knowledge is closely connected to the acquisition of the practical skills involved in working in a laboratory and conducting experiments.

Expected results

Undergraduates of this bachelor’s programme will have acquired a broad knowledge of physics as well as an in-depth knowledge of specific areas. They will be able to deal with physical questions using state-of-the-art databases and specialist literature as well as relevant (experimental, theoretical and computer-based) methods. Last but not least, they will have acquired key qualifications and soft skills such as proficiency in analytical thinking, troubleshooting and team work skills.
