Pharmaceutical Sciences Bachelor's programme

Course outline, qualifications and competences

The bachelor's programme in pharmaceutical sciences focusses on medicine and active pharmaceutical ingredients as well as on topics relevant to these areas. This is highly interdisciplinary subject, which combines different disciplines in the natural sciences (chemistry, physics, biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, biotechnology, microbiology) as well as subdomains of medical subjects (e.g. hygiene). The degree teaches fundamental knowledge of the development, composition, preparation and production of pharmaceutical ingredients from animate and inanimate nature, of quality assurance, composition, preparation, storage as well as biological effects and the safe use of medicine. In the laboratory practical, students acquire both theoretical knowledge and essential practical skills. In addition to subject-specific knowledge, they develop soft skills important for the world of work, such as teamwork skills as well as oral and written communication skills. The bachelor's programme in pharmaceutical sciences provides a basic education, teaching students the knowledge they need for career entry, for example, in analytical and diagnostic laboratories or in the pharmaceutical industry. After completing this programme, students can deepen their scientific knowledge and develop a specialisation by studying for a master's degree.

Expected results

Graduates of the bachelor's programme in pharmaceutical sciences have fundamental scientific knowledge of the most important areas of pharmaceutical sciences as well as related specialist areas. Due to their training, they are able to make use of important data bases and specialist literature as well as a scientific way of thinking. Furthermore, they are aware of possible ethnical, social and economic impacts of their subject area and stand out due to their responsible way of dealing with biological and chemical working materials.
