Musicology Bachelor's programme
The bachelor’s programme Musicology is offered in cooperation with the University of Music and Performing Arts, Graz. The range of courses is broad, interdisciplinary and cross-academic. The subject deals with music and its different contexts. It covers several scientific subareas: history of music, contemporary music, the question of the relationship between music and society, musical aesthetics, world music cultures, media and technology of music processing and production, music psychology and musical acoustics. The bachelor’s programme Musicology not only provides students with factual knowledge of music, but also with subject-specific academic writing skills (literature research, independent reception of specialist literature, knowledge of technical media and of how to express oneself in an appropriate oral and written style). In addition, students become familiar with subject-specific methods and theories. They learn how to comprehend, interpret and formulate musicological processes, facts and methods in a suitable manner. During different courses, students acquire important knowledge of presentation techniques and are encouraged to participate in academic discourse.
Undergraduates of the bachelor’s programme Musicology will have acquired a high level of musical skills and cultural competence. In addition, they will be able to flexibly apply their cultural competence and knowledge and adapt to professional requirements. They will have acquired basic knowledge of world music culture, of natural and social scientific approaches to music as well as aesthetic criteria research such as with respect to gender-specific questions. Last but not least, musicologists will possess general skills and social and personal competences including: team work and communication skills, independence, reflective skills and the ability to identify and resolve problems.
