Catholic Religious Education Master's programme

Course outline, qualifications and competences

The master’s programme Catholic Religious Education intends to enhance, deepen and specialise knowledge and skills acquired in the preceding bachelor’s programme. This master’s programme primarily qualifies students for three main areas corresponding to three study focuses: Teaching accreditation for secondary schools (Catechetics and Religious Education), theological adult education (theological approaches to adult education) as well as PR and media work (theology, communication and media). This programme conveys comprehensive knowledge of didactical methods in the area of education, the use of different media as well as knowledge of how to adapt teaching methods to different age groups and teaching situations. The programmes’s focus on theology, communication and media allows a theological view of media and the media society in general, reflecting the way in which religious content is communicated through audiovisual media. Students develop the ability to critically reflect on forms of language in various contexts, media-critical and judgement capabilities as well the ability to form a qualified opinion in the problematic field of media, ethics and society. This programme’s interdisciplinary focus enables students to think interconnectedly, to grasp complex connections and be in a position to conduct scientific discussions on a interdisciplinary theological level.

Expected results

Graduates of the master’s programme Catholic Religious Education will have acquired the ability to independently tackle topics and questions relating to religious education using theoretical and methodological means, and subsequently implement their knowledge in practical teaching and adult education. They will be able to establish theologically and pedagogically sound positions related to theoretical and practical problems of Catholic Religious Education, adult education, PR and media work as well as devising troubleshooting strategies.
