Greek Bachelor’s programme

Course outline, qualifications and competences

This Greek BA course focuses on the entire written heritage of Greek Antiquity.  This bachelor’s programme provides thorough knowledge and an in-depth understanding of Greek language structures. Students study many different texts, which they translate and analyse with the aid of secondary literature. This course provides basic education in important authors who have inspired the European history of culture and ideas. Besides dealing with the Greek language and its texts, the programme also focuses on the communication of art, cultural-historical knowledge and basic historical knowledge about Antiquity. Since Greek literature has shaped the European history of ideas right up to the present, this course deals with basic questions of European philosophy, society and human existence. Moreover, specific knowledge and academic skills are acquired during the course (source and literature research, independent reception of subject-specific literature and the correct use of specialist terminology, etc.).

Expected results

Undergraduates of the bachelor’s programme Greek will be able to build on their subject-related skills using a high level of self-initiative. They will be able to independently translate, analyse and comment on Greek texts. In addition to specialist skills, students will acquire key qualifications and soft skills such as the ability to work in a target-oriented and reflective manner, team work skills, intellectual flexibility and the ability to quickly grasp complex connections. Due to their knowledge, they will have a differentiated understanding of non-domestic civilisations leading to both openness and tolerance.
