German Language and Literature Master's programme

Course outline, qualifications and competences

The aim of the master’s programme German Language and Literature is to enhance and deepen knowledge acquired in the bachelor’s programme. It provides specialisation within a broader subject range of German Language and Literature, by allowing students to focus on two or three sub-areas. Students choose between the study areas “German Language” (Linguistics), “German Medieval Studies (Language and Literature of the Middle Ages) and “Contemporary German Literature” (Literary Studies). Students thus acquire deeper knowledge of the theory and methods of these subjects, lending their studies additional quality and individuality. Skills acquired in the areas of academic writing and methodical procedure are developed such that students are able to write their own thesis according to academic standards.  German Language and Literature studies integrates relevant historical, socio-cultural and individual contexts into analytical considerations, enabling students to become proficient in transdisciplinary and interdisciplinary thinking. Moreover, they acquire key skills for their future career. These include: the ability to think in a reflective manner, intellectual and judgement ability, advanced writing skills and the ability to present complex facts.

Expected results

Graduates of the master’s programme German Language and Literature will have acquired a high level of competence, which they are then able to enhance independently.  Graduates of German Language and Literature will have acquired abilities and proficiency in German at the highest possible level. They will therefore be sought after in professions involving language, texts, literature and communication. In addition, they will be able to flexibly apply their knowledge and skills and adapt to professional requirements.
