German Language and Literature Bachelor's programme

Course outline, qualifications and competences

The bachelor’s programme German Language and Literature provides students with basic subject knowledge as well as methodical and practical skills in all areas of the discipline. It provides sound basic education in written and oral German texts from the Middle Ages to the present as well as in the theories and methods of German language and literature. Students are in a position to use these methods and theories to answer communicative, linguistic, textual, literary and general cultural questions. The programme also provides students with the skills needed for academic work within this specific discipline. This includes the ability to trace the relevant sources and literature, the correct use of specialist terminology, critical judgement and the ability to present results and knowledge in a linguistically appropriate manner. In addition to subject knowledge, students also acquire key qualifications and soft skills for their career, such as excellent linguistic competences (rhetoric, writing skills), the ability to use different presentation techniques as well as proficiency in communication and team work. This range of optional and required elective subjects combined with experience gained outside of university gives students the opportunity to individualise their qualification profile - a vital asset in today’s professional world.
