Sustainable Urban and Regional Development Master's programme

Course outline, qualifications and competences

The master’s programme Sustainable Urban and Regional Development builds on the broad education provided by the bachelor’s programme and aims to deepen, enhance and specialise the knowledge already acquired. This programme focuses on teaching theoretical knowledge and practical skills in the areas of urban and regional development as well as the tourist industry with a special focus on national and international economic areas and tourism geography. Students acquire the ability to analyse modern issues and problems related to urban and regional research and development (models, conflict areas, strategic planning, public funding, etc.) including development and planning of tourism (ecological, economic and social effects of tourist activities, etc.) and to develop troubleshooting strategies. As was the case in the bachelor’s programme, this programme has an interdisciplinary and integrative character. Students deal with man-environment relationships and are able to respond to questions of globalisation and its consequences, as well as global change, resource management, utilisation conflicts and sustainability in a holistic and interdisciplinary fashion. During their studies, students acquire key qualifications and soft skills for their careers. These include the ability to use quantitative and qualitative methods of data acquisition and collection, troubleshooting competences based on methods and theory, the ability to identify complex relationships from an integrative perspective, presentation techniques and oral and written skills.

Expected results

Graduates of this master’s programme will have acquired specialised knowledge of sustainable urban and regional development and tourism geography and will be familiar with socio-economic and geographical technology (GIS, remote sensing, mapping, geostatistics, etc.).  They will be able to identify the complexity of social, economic and ecological interdependencies and to communicate them to different interest groups in an appropriate written and oral form.
