Social Pedagogy Master’s programme

Course outline, qualifications and competences

A number of theoretical positions and facilities deal with social support and additional aid for people having difficulties coping with daily life. Social Pedagogy aims to develop inclusive conditions (inclusion instead of exclusion of people with special needs, developmental and behavioural disorders, a difficult upbringing and other discrimination in all life situations) in all kinds of social systems (e.g. living, working, education). In the master’s programme Social Pedagogy, students acquire knowledge and skills that enable them to work directly with people of all ages to manage socio-pedagogical institutions or to use their broad range of acquired theoretical or practical methods in social planning in a gender-sensitive manner. The programme consists of a core module and a continuing specialist module in the core area of Social Pedagogy or in Early Education (in-depth and research-related specialisation in parenting, care and education of children in families and out-of-school institutions from birth to the end of primary school). Both in the core module and in the specialist module, students learn subject-specific and theoretical competences, practical skills and research competences. The programme also includes a compulsory internship.

Expected results

Graduates of the master’s programme Social Pedagogy will be able to realise, reflect and consider the achievements of Social Pedagogy as a response to the dynamics and fault lines of society, taking into account individual and social development and problems in a heterogeneous globalised society in need of inclusion. They will have acquired comprehensive subject-specific theoretical and practical skills and will be proficient in working directly with the target groups, managing socio-pedagogical institutions and facilities as well as in planning work.

Graduates of the master’s programme Social Pedagogy specialising in Early Education will be able to recognise and understand societal and social processes against the backdrop of educational, psychological, cultural and sociological theories; they will be able to treat them as complex pluridimensional systems, critically reflecting in terms of time and space and participating in (inter)national discourse.
