Biology Bachelor’s programme

Course outline, qualifications and competences

The bachelor's programme Biology provides basic practical skills and theoretical knowledge in the field of General Biology and neighbouring subjects and prepares students for activities in biological research and development. Subject of the programme are biological organisms (e.g. animals, plants, fungi and humans). The following problems are dealt with in relation to these organisms: origin, identification of relationship and species using scientific methods (evolution and systematics), adaptation to the environment, cohabitation and behaviour (ecology), procreation and reproduction, cellular structures, tissues and organs and their interaction as a functioning organism (developmental biology, cell biology, anatomy and functional morphology), nutrition, primary nutritional groups (physiology), sensory perception, stimulus processing and reaction mechanisms (neurophysiology and aesthesiophysiology). Developing theoretical knowledge is closely related to work in the laboratory and and on field excursions, which enables students to understand, analyse and assess biological systems (also, by using molecular methods). The programme is interdisciplinary, involving basics in chemistry, physics, statistics and information technology (e.g. mathematical modelling, biometry and EDP-assisted information systems). Besides their specific qualifications, students develop soft skills such as the ability to work in a team, problem solving competences as well as written and oral communication skills.

Expected results

Graduates of the bachelor's programme will have acquired a sound theoretical basic education in the field of general biology and will have command of basic practical work and analysis techniques. They will be able to apply their acquired knowledge on a universal and interdisciplinary level and update their knowledge in accordance with the latest research standards and with the help of traditional and new media for information gathering. Moreover, they are able to use biological and chemical agents in a responsible manner.
