English Studies/American Studies Bachelor's programme
The subject English Studies/American Studies deals with the language, culture and literature of the British and American civilisations. In the bachelor’s programme, the students’ practical language knowledge is enhanced so that they develop the ability to employ the English language in different contexts and at different linguistic levels. The bachelor’s programme provides students with basic training in the scientific subjects of linguistic, literature and cultural science. Moreover, specific knowledge and skills in scientific work are also acquired during the course (literature research, correct use of subject-related terminology, independent reception of subject-related literature, etc.). Students acquire the ability to tackle scientific problems methodically and theoretically and present their results in an adequate written and oral form. Over the course of this programme, they acquire a range of key qualifications and soft skills, such as multimedia skills, a highly developed ability to communicate in their native tongue and in a foreign language, teamwork skills, as well as the ability to sustain a dialogue with other civilisations based on tolerance and openness.
Undergraduates of the bachelor’s programme will have acquired basic knowledge of cultural sciences, literature and linguistics. Their command of the English language will have reached a C1/C2 level according to the CEFR. They are able to continually enhance their knowledge and skills with the help of traditional and new media and thus to remain up to date with the latest research. Undergraduates are in a position to tackle scientific problems based on scientific methods and theory and are able to present their results critically and objectively.
