Joint International Master in Cultural Sociology

Course outline, qualifications and competences

The Joint International Master in Cultural Sociology is offered as part of a Joint Degree Programme in cooperation with the following international universities: University of Zadar (Croatia), University of Trento (Italy) and Masaryk University (Brno, Czech Republic). The range of courses is broad, interdisciplinary, cross-academic and cross-national. Cultural sociology deals with dynamics, complexity and interaction between social, cultural and economic processes and systems. The discipline analyses, for example, questions of migration, generation memory, collective trauma, civil culture, identity formation, gender, sexuality, anti-Semitism and protest culture. Dealing with these subjects requires an interdisciplinary approach, use of empirical methods as well as the ability to think in an independent, critical, reflective and creative manner. Students initially build up basic knowledge by tackling classical and modern theories of cultural sociology, thus acquiring competences in dealing with qualitative and quantitative methods of empirical social research. Students are required to complete a semester at a partner university abroad offering various specialisations. Students thus acquire additional competence in one foreign language (Croatian, Italian, Czech).

Expected results

Graduates of the Joint International Master in Cultural Sociology will have acquired sound theoretical and methodological knowledge, enabling them to analyse social and cultural processes / systems by taking into account the complexity of the global environment and different interrelations. Experiencing different cultural and social circumstances promotes abilities such as troubleshooting competences, conflict management and the ability to communicate on an intercultural level.
