Joint Degree Master's programme Gender Studies
The Joint Degree master’s programme Gender Studies is offered in cooperation with Ruhr University Bochum (Germany). The range of courses is broad, interdisciplinary, cross-academic and cross-national. Due to current cultural, social, political and economic change, today’s graduates require specialist knowledge of gender relations as well as of possibilities and opportunities for change. This programme focuses on the significance of gender for individual people, society and culture in the past and present. Graduates acquire knowledge of the development of gender studies. They deal with theories and methods from different scientific disciplines, in order to be able to analyse gender-related subjects on an interdisciplinary basis. Moreover, they deal with specific questions relating to gender in social structures (politics, economy, employment, religion, upbringing, education, etc.) and to the effects of gender category on social positions. This programme intends to prepare students for a practical profession, which is why they are required to complete a compulsory internship. A key part of this programme requires students to spend an obligatory semester at a partner university. The experience of different cultural and social circumstances promotes abilities such as troubleshooting competences and intercultural communication skills. Students develop understanding for foreign cultures as well as openness and tolerance.
Graduates of the master’s programme Gender Studies will have acquired a high level of specialist skills. They will be able to describe, analyse and assess cultural and social processes associated with gender relations using relevant theories and methods. Due to their interdisciplinary and application-oriented education, graduates will be able to promote equal opportunities for all in many different contexts.
