Joint Master‘s Degree Programme in Translation

Course outline, qualifications and competences

The Joint master’s degree programme Translation is offered as part of a Joint Programme together with the University of Ljubljana (Slovenia). The range of courses is broad, interdisciplinary, cross-academic and cross-national. This programme provides professional translators with the necessary skills to allow them to assert themselves in various professions. Language courses include Slovenian, German and English. This programme enables students to specialise in (foreign) language skills and intercultural competence, additionally providing them with knowledge relating to methods and theories of translation studies and translational abilities. Students tackle different types of texts enabling them to appropriately translate specialist (i.e. business, law, natural and social sciences, IT, humanities) and literary texts into the target language. Moreover, they become familiar with computer-based translation software and how to compile terminology databases. Students are required to do a semester at a partner university abroad. This experience fosters language skills and social and intercultural competences which are crucial for professional translators.

Expected results

Graduates of the master’s programme Translation will become highly specialised experts for translation and inter/ transcultural communication. They will be able to mediate between different cultures and speakers. They will be able to translate various written, oral and multimedia texts into the target language using appropriate techniques of analysis and translation that are tailored to meet the requirements of the relevant target group and are delivered in a functional and culturally sensitive manner.
