Philosophy - Faculty of Environmental and Regional Sciences and Education Doctoral programme

Course outline, qualifications and competences

The doctoral programme of Philosophy at the Faculty of Environmental and Regional Sciences and Education (URBI) provides students with a scientific education that reflects high international standards. This programme focuses on the analysis of cultural artefacts and expressions of human life and action, using cultural, social and philosophical theories and methods. In their doctoral thesis, students learn to independently master new scientific questions. They acquire new knowledge and widen their methodological competences in a compulsory subject, in which they also write their doctoral thesis, as well as in an elective course. The doctoral programme promotes students’ development of subject-specific scientific working methods. It focuses on methods of empirical social research as well as on methods used to describe, analyse and reconstruct the relevant object of investigation. By regularly presenting their research results and through exchange with the scientific community (in lectures, special congresses and in scientific journals), doctoral students acquire skills in written and oral knowledge transfer. In addition, they are proficient in co-operative networking and dealing with any necessary interdisciplinary aspects. In addition to subject-specific knowledge, students further develop interdisciplinary key qualifications when writing their doctoral thesis (project and time management, troubleshooting and flexibility).

Expected results

Graduates of the doctoral programme of Philosophy from the Faculty of Environmental and Regional Sciences and Education, will be highly qualified junior researchers with a broad scope of specialist and methodological skills, which they can apply to specific questions. Students are able to critically analyse, evaluate and connect complex ideas. Due to their ability to understand aspects of human life and action and due to their independent innovative research, they will substantially contribute to an (inter)national knowledge economy.
