Doctoral programme Catholic Theology

Course outline, qualifications and competences

The doctoral programme Catholic Theology provides top-quality scientific education at an international level. In their doctoral thesis, students learn to independently master new scientific questions within the theological canon. They acquire new knowledge and widen their methodological competences in a compulsory subject, in which they also write their doctoral thesis. Moreover, students are required to take courses dealing with the diversity of theological subjects, research perspectives, positions in the philosophy of science, and work on the organisation, presentation and communication of research projects.  By regularly presenting their research results and through exchange with the scientific community (in lectures, special congresses, on Theology Research Day), doctoral students acquire skills in written and oral knowledge transfer in different educational contexts. They acquire the ability to bring their theological point of view to social, political and scientific discourse. In addition to the subject itself, students further develop key interdisciplinary qualifications while writing their doctoral thesis (project and time management, troubleshooting and flexibility).

Expected results

Graduates of the doctoral programme Catholic Theology will be highly qualified junior researchers with a broad scope of specialist and methodological skills, which they can apply to specific theological and interdisciplinary questions. Based on their own innovative research connected to questions of faith and religion in ecclesiastical, social and cultural contexts, they will be able to contribute substantially to the development of an (inter) national theological knowledge society.
